Biography
Jean Balissat was born in 1936 in Lausanne (Switzerland), and was drawn straight away to composing and conducting. He studied harmony and counterpoint in Lausanne, before taking composition, orchestration and conducting in Geneva. In order to gain a better understanding of the orchestra, he also studied horn and percussion. As orchestral director and bandmaster, he has conducted numerous ensembles in Switzerland. Jean Balissat has composed works for orchestra, chamber music groups, percussion, choir, wind band, brass band and solo instruments. Notably, he composed the score for the Fête des Vignerons (Festival of Wine Growers) which was celebrated in Vevey in 1977. He taught composition, orchestration and musical analysis for many years in the Lausanne and Geneva Conservatories. From 1986 to 1990 he was president of the Association of Swiss Musicians and, from 1991 to 2004, of the SUISA Foundation for Music. Jean Balissat died in september 2007.

Né à Lausanne (Suisse) en 1936, Jean Balissat a été attiré d’emblée par la composition et la direction. Il acquit sa formation à Lausanne pour l’harmonie et le contrepoint avant d’étudier la composition, l’orchestration et la direction à Genève. Pour mieux pénétrer les mécanismes de l’orchestre, il travailla aussi le cor et la percussion. Chef d’orchestre, chef de musique, il a dirigé de nombreux ensembles de Suisse. Jean Balissat a composé pour orchestre, ensembles de musique de chambre, percussion, choeur, harmonie, brass-band, instruments solistes. Il est notamment l’auteur de la partition de la Fête des Vignerons qui fut célébrée à Vevey en 1977. Durant de nombreuses années, il a enseigné la composition, l’orchestration et l’analyse aux conservatoires de Lausanne et de Genève. De 1986 à 1990, il a présidé l’Association des Musiciens Suisses et, de 1991 à 2004, la Fondation SUISA pour la musique. Jean Balissat est décédé en septembre 2007.

Studierte Harmonie und Kontrapunkt in Lausanne, dann in Genf Komposition, Orchestration und Dirigieren. Zum besseren Verständnis des Orchesters lernte er noch Horn und Schlagwerk. Als Orchester- und Blasmusikdirigent hat er zahlreiche schweizerische Ensembles geleitet. Jean Balissat hat Musik geschrieben für Orchester, Kammermusik-Ensembles, für Schlagwerk, Chöre, Blasorchester, Brass Bands, Instrumentalsolisten. Er hat die Partitur des Fête des Vignerons (Winzerfestes) komponiert, das 1977 in Vevey stattfand. Über lange Jahre lehrte er Komposition, Orchestration und Analyse an den Konservatorien von Lausanne und Genf. Von 1986 bis 1990 war er Präsident des Schweizerischen Tonkünstlervereins und von 1991 bis 2004 der SUISA-Stiftung für Musik. Jean Balissat ist im Septembre 2007 verstorben.
