Charles Reskin, Intermediate Ensemble Outings
Saturday, March 30, 2013
for 3 to 4 trumpets
This book is a collection of original short pieces for three or four trumpets (and one for two trumpets and trombone or baritone). Some of the pieces can even be performed using more than one player on a part; e.g., the entire trumpet section of your school band might use some of the pieces for special events . As in the other Trumpet Outings volumes, there is a wide and eclectic range of musical styles and moods, from traditional classical through jazz and pop. Here again, the main idea is to have fun exploring many different types of music, and to enjoy the satisfaction of perfecting your ensemble playing! More information
Jean-François Michel, 3 Bagatelles
Tuesday, March 12, 2013
for bass trombone and piano
Bagatelles, similarly to “Badineries” or “Capprici” allow composers to express their sens of humor, of parody or derision. This genre inspires strongly Jean-François Michel as his 3 Bagatelles for bass trombone and piano show in this score. This piece requests a good musical and technical understanding between performers with free hand for their imagination. Jean-François Michel has developed a creativ and versatile repertoire for his numerous and talented students. Nevertheless, the evident quality of these musical works can successfully enrich recital concert programs outside pedagogical institutions. More information
Stanley Friedman, Spanish Dances
Wednesday, January 30, 2013
for brass quintet
Spanish Dances won First Prize in the 2003 International Trumpet Guild Composition Competition. This work certainly is not “authentically Spanish”, nor was it ever meant to be taken as such. But the three movements were inspired by traditional dances and structured in Classical forms: Habanera/Sonata, Pavane/Variations, Bolero/Rondo (with themes borrowed from the first two movements). Richard Lane, Theme & Variations
Tuesday, December 18, 2012
for horn and piano
The title and text of the theme is pivotal: the theme is "Sweet Adeline," an old song, very romantic but very passé in its language, frequently sung by a kind of vocal group called "barbershop quartet," four men singing in close harmony. It is also often sung by someone doing a parody of a drunken man singing. Because of all these reasons, the song is always quoted in a slightly facetious manner; hence, the "toujours avec une expression grave” [always with a serious expression] handwritten in French at the beginning of the piece by Richard Lane and completed with the drawing of a comic man’s face.
