About this Work
Sonata Breve for trumpet unaccompanied (1999). It is a thorough reworking of the earlier Sonata Breve for unaccompanied tuba, composed in 1981. The version for trumpet was first performed by Carl Lindquist at the 2002 New Music Festival of Sandusky. The three movements follow the traditional fast-slow-fast format and bear the following indications:
1. With assurance
2. Introspectively
3. With energy
The first movement, in sonata form, begins with an assertive opening theme followed by a more lyrical second theme. Movement two, a pensive siciliano in three-part song form, becomes increasingly ornamented. The last movement is a spirited dance with occasional asymmetrical meters.
Sonata Breve is dedicated, with affection, to my son, Ryan.
