About this Work

Beginning of 1999, I approached Richard Lane to write something new for the upcoming 10th International Viola d'amore Congress at the Bundesakademie für Musikalische Jugendbildung in Trossingen, Germany, July 2000. The result was the creation of two pieces: Three Songs (2000) for soprano and viola d'amore and this Suite for oboe, viola d'amore and piano written in March 1999.
The trio evolved into a five-movement work of contrasting moods and with some cadenzas that offered an opportunity for each instrument to shine. Nevertheless, this is a true chamber music work with intriguing inter-weavings and interactions between the three instruments that result in most appealing music.
At this congress in Trossingen, Richard Lane was honored with a short talk on his life by this writer and then a concert devoted entirely to his complete music for viola d'amore. The Three Songs and this Suite were given their world premieres there in which I had the pleasure of playing the viola d'amore parts. I have edited to viola d'amore part with suggested bowings and fingerings, based on my study and performances of this fine work.
The tuning for the viola d'amore is the standard tuning of D major (A-d-a-d’-f#’-a’-d’’)
