3 Excursions, by Joseph Turrin treads gratifying terrain. Neither diatonic nor abstract, in an idiom familiar to performers and listeners, 3 Excursions is a handsomely crafted showcase for both the trumpet and the piano. The virile energy of the former and the percussive incisiveness of the latter are displayed to full advantage in a dialogue that the duo engages in as if it were second nature to them both, and never forced.
A heraldic opening movement, a poised central movement, and an airborne, hemiola-inflected final movement join to form a compact, satisfying whole.
