Áskell Másson (*1953)
horn in F, harp, marimba/vibraphone and strings
January 27, 2024 | Dark Music Days Festival | Reykjavik, Iceland. Stefán Jon Bernarõsson (horn), Reykjavik Chamber Orchestra, Mirian Khukhukaishvili (conducting).
Although of a predominantly lyrical nature, this work utilizes many aspects of horn technique and thus presents a considerable challenge for the player.
The work opens with dark chords seeking upwards. The horn enters with a modest, but characteristic statement. After going through various textures, a meditation and a staccato section, a cadenza, and a short reiteration, the work ends in a misterioso with several new colors from the ensemble, the horn playing natural glissandos and concluding with trills on its very highest notes.
